Frequently Asked Questions

Here's a few of the most frequently asked questions by customers

  • Do you deliver?

Yes, absolutely.  Call our main number and we will schedule your delivery.

  • How much does a dump truck hold?

Materials are figured by the cubic yard.  We can haul 12cy of heavier products such as gravel and sand, and up to 14cy of products such as crushed stone and loam.  Full loads are the best value.  Whether you order 1 yard or 12 yards, the delivery cost is the same.

We also have tri-axle trucks that can hold 16-18 cubic yards of material.  These trucks are heavier and require more room to manuever.  Be mindful of the weight you are placing on your driveway or other areas.  It does cost more per hour for delivery with a triaxle, but overall it is a better value if you need bulk.

Finally, we have live bottom trailers that are hauled with a trailer truck and can hold up to 22-24cy.  You need plenty of room and good access and a need for a lot of material.  If that is the case, then this might be the best option for you.  It needs to be practical to access your location with the truck.

  • How much do I need?

Quantifying what you need is relatively easy.  Figure the square footage of the area you want to place the material (Length x Width), and then multiply it by the depth and that will give you cubic feet.  Then divide that by 27 to get cubic yards.  For Example.  I have a driveway 40' long and 20' wide, and I want to place a 3" driveway topping on it.  40 x 20 x .25 (3" is .25 of a foot)  = 7.41 cubic yards.  Now, if this material is compacted, it will shrink approximately 25%.  7.41 x 1.25 = 9.26 cy  You would need at 9 or 10 yards.  If its possible you would have some waste, or use for another couple yards, i would order a full load to maximize the value of my delivery.  If you need help calculating what you need, feel free to give us a call.

  • Can you load pickups and small trailers?

Yes, we can load pickups and small trailers with a mini loader at our 719 Main Rd N, Hampden location.  Our hours are posted on the website.  We do accept cash and credit card.  In the winter, the piles tend to freeze up and you may need to carefully be loaded by a larger loader if you choose to accept that risk.  We also will allow you to load 5 gallon pails.

  • Can I have a look at the products in person?

You absolutely can, and no you don't even need an appointment.  During our regular hours, feel free to swing by 719 Main Rd N, Hampden and view our products in our retail yard.  They are in small bins with signage to indicate what they are.

  • Can I get a price sheet?

Yes, you absolutely can get a price sheet.  Contact Eric at emalchiodi@hughesbrosinc.com or grab a paper copy in the dispatch office (blue roofed building by the truck scales)

  • Do you deliver to my area?

We deliver in the Greater Bangor Area, and generally within a 30 mile radius.  Our rates start with a 1 hour minimum charge for delivery, and we will quote your delivery when you call to schedule your delivery.

  • How much notice do you require for a delivery?

Some days we can deliver the same day, some days it can be 2 weeks out.  Don't wait until the last second if you can help it, call ahead and discuss your desired date and we will do the best we can to accomodate.

  • Will you deliver if we are not home?

We sometimes deliver if a customer places a cone or some indicator of where they want their load dropped.  The customer takes responsibility for the delivery from the curb/edge of road onto the property.  We recommend you are home, but if you don't see risk for yourself, we may be able to accomodate.

  • How thick do I need to place my material?

This question depends on a variety of factors and uses.  It is always best to call the office and consult with a professional.  If you are doing a resurfacing of an existing material, 3" is pretty typical.  If you are placing material under a concrete pad, 12" is pretty typical.  If you are building a parking area, 15" - 18" is pretty typical.  If you are placing loam, 3-4" is pretty typical.
