General Concrete Mix

  • 2500 PSI

    Light duty concrete. A more economical alternative for light traffic applications like stick-built or pop-up sheds.

  • 3000 PSI

    The most widely used mix for residential and light commercial foundations and slabs.

  • 3500 PSI

    Used by many professionals in lieu of 3000 psi concrete for residential and light commercial applications. This mix imparts an added measure of strength and durability for foundations, basement slabs, garage slabs, and light commercial buildings.

  • 4500 PSI

    When strength and durability are essential, 4000 is the obvious choice. This class of mix is typical of exterior flatwork such as sidewalks and parking aprons, retaining walls, bridge abutments, and high traffic indoor slabs.

  • 4500 & 5000 PSI

    These mixes are characterized by high strength, extreme durability, and environment-specific properties. Used mainly in heavy civil construction such as bridge decks, heavy-duty aprons/travel ways, slabs for large equipment, and marine environments.

Specialty Mix

  • Grout

    Coarse, fine, or cellular grout for concrete masonry units, thin overlays, or filling hard-to-reach places such as culvert slip-linings and tank/pipe abandonments. High fluidity can reach places conventional concrete can’t.

  • Self-Consolidating Concrete

    An engineered mix that exhibits very high strength and durability while providing extreme flowability. Used to fill structures that require premium concrete without the ability to consolidate it by conventional means.

  • Flowable Fill

    A quick and easy replacement for compacted gravel. Pours into place fully compacted without the manpower and time involved with placing lifts of gravel and mechanically compacting.

  • Lightweight Concrete

    Lightweight concrete utilizes an expanded shale aggregate to reduce the dead load of a concrete structure or slab by as much as 20%

Concrete Performance Admixtures

  • Fiber

    Concrete fibers can be polypropylene, nylon, or steel. They are dispersed by the millions throughout the concrete mix. Fibers “sew” microcracks in the concrete together preventing them from becoming large cracks. Fiber-reinforced concrete has greater ductility, flexural strength, impact resistance, and fire resistance.

  • Set Accelerators

    Once the temperature of concrete dips below 40 degrees, the cement hydration process stalls out. Set accelerators give the concrete a boost, reducing the set time and protecting it during its initial set phase when it is most vulnerable.

  • Set Retarders

    In central and eastern Maine concrete deliveries are not always just down the block, and it does, in fact, get hot in the summer! Once water is added to cement, the hydration reaction of concrete begins and happens even faster with higher temperatures. That means the clock is ticking to get the concrete to the job and in place. Set retarders do a fantastic job of extending the window for transport and placement while preserving the quality of the concrete.

  • Water Reducers

    Water is necessary for cement to hydrate, but most water in concrete is solely for workability. Increasing amounts of water lead to reduced strength and durability while increasing cracking, shrinkage, and permeability. Water-reducing admixtures provide high workability through a chemical reaction that greatly reduces the amount of mixing water needed. LESS WATER = BETTER CONCRETE!

  • Does it cost extra to order just 1 yard of concrete?

    Yes, any order less than 4.5 cubic yards is considered a small load and has additional fees associated with it.  This is to help offset the delivery cost of the concrete and not hauling the most efficient amount of yards on the truck.

  • How long do I have to unload the truck?

    Generally, you have an hour from the time the truck lands on your site to get it unloaded and back on the road again.  Make sure to leave time for the driver to setup and washdown, which could take 5 minutes + each.  If you run over on your time, you will be billed at our truck overtime rate.

  • How many yards does a truck hold?

    A mixer truck can hold up to 10.5 cubic yards of concrete.

  • What happens if the concrete truck gets stuck?

    The customer is responsible for the truck from the curb/edge of pavement onto the property.  You need to know if you have any underground structures, such as septic tanks or other things that could be damaged on your site.  You also need to make sure the truck has good access to the places you want it to unload.  If it gets stuck, you will have to pay the top bill to have a wrecker get it un-stuck.  Please do not try to get the truck into any dangerous situations where it may tip over.  We don't want anyone to get hurt!

  • I have questions about a commercial project, who do I call?

  • Can I have 3/4" stone delivered in a mixer truck?

    Yes you can, but ensure you have enough drop and enough pitch on the chute when you have it delivered.  A long reach and a flat pitch, it may not come down the chute properly.

  • No one answered the plant phone, what do I do?

    If the batch man stepped away from the office, leave him a message or call back again.  Sometimes he is in the middle of batching or attending to the plant.

After a lot of blood sweat and tears, the Ellsworth Plant Construction has Completed!
